You Choose What I Write

Every time I post a piece of flash fiction on the blog, I receive private messages and emails from people who want to know if I’m going to turn it into a longer story. Sometimes, I do. Examples include Caleb (a novel in progress and a rough draft I’m already sharing on Patreon), Dying Breath (now a short story released on Amazon, Kobo, Google Play, and Barnes & Noble), and Totem (now an ongoing flash fiction serial.) Other times, I don’t. My flash fiction is a way for me to explore new ideas, and unfortunately, it’s impossible for me to turn all of them into something bigger.

However, if you were absolutely enthralled by a piece you read on the blog and need to read more, there is a way to get what you want.

In exchange for a $5 pledge on Patreon, I’ll turn the flash fiction piece of your choice into a longer story.

This is how Dying Breath got its start. Though it was only a piece of flash fiction when I originally wrote it, a generous patron at the $5 level asked me for more. I loved the result so much that I ended up releasing it to the world.

It’s an amazing deal for both of us. You get more of the story you love and I get closer to making a living writing fiction.

I’ve shared in the past how I operate at a significant loss. I make roughly $300 per month from my stories (mostly thanks to my amazing patrons), but spend almost $2,000 per month on advertising and hosting. This doesn’t include the one-off costs required to pay for editors and illustrators when I release new books. I’ll continue to do this for as long as I can, because I love what I do, and because I’m thrilled to have touched so many hearts through my stories. But I would give anything to be a full-time writer, and if I could narrow the gap between what I make and what I spend each month, I would be well on my way to meeting that goal, which means more books released more often.

If you can’t afford to support me at the $5 level, there are other less expensive rewards. For example, the $2 level entitles you to a free digital copy of every book I write for as long as you’re a patron. You also get to read rough drafts of every story I write before it’s published (I’ve already shared a ton of drafts on Patreon that haven’t been released to the public yet) and will have your name placed in the acknowledgments of every book I publish.

I’ll Send You a Signed Hardcover Copy of “Snapshots”

Snapshots: The Collected Flash Fiction of Jeff Coleman, Volume 1.

Over time, people have asked me if I would ever publish a print collection of the flash fiction I write for my blog. Last year, I finally decided to act on that idea, and in February, though I never made a formal announcement, I finally released the book, which is now available from most online bookstores.

Periodically, I offer my readers a hardcover book in exchange for a monthly pledge on Patreon that goes toward helping me build a full-time career around my art. This month, I want to offer you my flash fiction collection, Snapshots: The Collected Flash Fiction of Jeff Coleman, Volume 1.

If you pledge to my Patreon campaign at the $2 level or above, I’ll send you a signed hardcover copy.

Please note that this offer is only available to new patrons. Unfortunately, former patrons aren’t eligible. If you’re an existing $5 or $10 patron, don’t worry: you’re going to get a copy 🙂 To my existing $2 patrons, I can’t afford to send you one for free (I really wanted to), but I do plan to offer the book to you guys at cost in a few months when I return to the States to visit family and can order and sign more copies, so stay tuned.

Please note that Patreon pledges are recurring monthly charges. I post four paid pieces of flash fiction on the platform per month, which means a $2 pledge amounts to $8 per month. If that’s too much, you can make a $2 pledge, then set a lower monthly limit so you won’t go over your budget.

If you don’t want to become a patron, don’t worry: I’ll provide information at a later date about how to order a normal non-signed copy (paperback or hardcover) through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

I had to order and sign a limited number of books in California before returning to my wife in the Philippines, so there are only 10 copies available.

That means if you want one, you should act soon 😉 When I do these promotions, it usually takes me two days to give away 10-15 books.

Books will ship out May 7, 2018, after the first round of pledges have been processed.

Your first pledge must process successfully in order to receive the book, but after that, you’re free to cancel for any reason, no questions asked.

Here are the rules (there are only three.)

1. You must have a shipping address in the United States. I try to make these offers available in other countries, but because this is my own book that I’ll be mailing out from a US address, I have to be more selective. A huge apology to my international friends 🙁

2. You must become a patron at or above the $2 level on or before Tuesday, April 24, 2018, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time, and your first pledge at the beginning of May must process successfully before I can ship out the book. After that, you’re free to cancel, no questions asked.

3. This offer is only available to new patrons. Unfortunately, former patrons aren’t eligible.

That’s it!

Once you become a patron, I’ll send you an email to request your shipping address. Then, once your first pledge clears at the beginning of May, I’ll ship out your signed book.

Read Dying Breath, Chapters 1-6 for free!

A place of waiting.

The thought echoes over and over again through Jerome’s mind. Waking in a barn with no memory of where he’s come from, it is his only clue. But before he even has time to think, sleep bears down on him, and when he opens his eyes again, he’s someone else.

A soldier one moment, a financial analyst the next. A little girl. An old man. With each life Jerome experiences, he remembers something else of his own. Flashes of a bright light. A hospital bed. A mysterious woman named Darlene.

But what does it mean? What does each life have in common? Most importantly, what can it tell Jerome about himself?

On March 24, 2018, Dying Breath will be released.

What started out as a request from a $5 patron turned into one of my favorite projects. A lot of work went into this short story, and I’m really excited to share it with all of you. To celebrate the book’s launch, I’m sharing the first six chapters for free. That’s more than half the book!

I’m going to send out an email to my mailing list on March 10 with those first chapters. To read them, all you have to do is subscribe by entering your email address below. As an added bonus, you’ll also receive my short story, The Sign, immediately after confirming your subscription.

Please note that after subscribing, you’ll be emailed a confirmation link. You must click that link to complete your subscription in order to receive the first six chapters of Dying Breath.

Enjoy! 🙂

I’ll Send You A Free Signed Hardcover

As many of you know, I recently published an illustrated hardcover edition of my short story Rite of Passage. It was a difficult road fraught with many challenges, but I’m excited about the end result, and I feel like celebrating!

Ordinarily, you would have to buy the book on Amazon or Barnes & Noble for about $21 (full retail is $27.99), or from my own store on Gumroad for $17.99 plus $4.99 shipping. But between today and February 12, I want to send you a free signed copy.

Here’s the deal.

I want to write full time, but I need help building a self-sustaining platform for my books. You guys have given me so much support and encouragement already, and I hate asking for money without offering something fun in return.

If you pledge to my Patreon campaign at the $2 level or above, I’ll send you a free signed hardcover copy of Rite of Passage.

There are only 20 available, so take advantage of this offer before they’re gone.

If you change your mind after you’ve received the book, you’re free to cancel your pledge, no questions asked. I believe most people are honest and won’t take advantage.

By pledging, you’re also entitled to other perks. The $2 level gives you access to free copies of every e-book I’ve released, plus rough drafts of every novel, novella and short story I write (I’ve already shared a ton of drafts that haven’t yet been published, including a novel based on my flash fiction piece The Tunnel.) The $5 level lets you decide which of my flash fiction pieces I should turn into a longer short story. If you give at the $10 level, I’ll send you a hardcover copy of one of my favorite books every three months. Whatever you can give, it will help me immensely on my journey toward becoming a full time writer.

There are only three rules.

1. You have to have a shipping address in the United States to be eligible. I really wanted to include Canada on this, but I’m sending these myself from a US address, and international shipping costs are prohibitively expensive 🙁

2. You must become a patron at or above the $2 level on or before Monday, February 12, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time.

3. You must be a new patron. Unfortunately, former patrons aren’t eligible (If you’re already a $5 or $10 patron, don’t worry. I’ve already sent you a copy. You don’t have to do anything else!)

That’s it.

Once you become a patron, I’ll send you an email to request your shipping address, then sign and ship a copy to you as a gift.

Read My Next Novella For Free

Image licensed by Shutterstock.

On August 5, I’m going to release an entire novella to my mailing list for free, one chapter every two weeks. I’ve never done this before, and I haven’t decided if I’m going to do it again. If you want to read one of my longer works but don’t have an e-reader or aren’t able to purchase anything, now’s your chance.

If you’re already a subscriber, you don’t have to do anything except wait 🙂 If you’re not, all you have to do is join the mailing list by entering your email address at the bottom of this blog post and clicking the “Subscribe” button (if you do, you’ll also receive a free copy of my short story The Sign.) To complete your subscription, you might have to check your spam folder for the confirmation email.

Here’s a back of the book blurb to whet your appetite:

Giles has always felt different, like he’s never truly belonged, and it isn’t until he meets others of his kind that he discovers his true nature. As an Earthbound, he’s both human and Immortal, born to protect the world from an ancient race that has the collective power to destroy the universe.

He embraces his mission, devotes his life to imprisoning every malevolent creature he encounters. But when a routine binding goes awry and one escapes before he can capture it, Giles, who has never been outside California, must travel halfway across the world to the Philippines, where the runaway phantom has taken up residence.

Shaken by his inability to capture it and afraid of failing again, he must venture far beyond his comfort zone to confront the evil creature once and for all. But this time it knows Giles is coming, and it will do anything in its power to stop him…

A Special Gift for Dark Tower Fans

If you’re a fan of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, you’ll recognize Charlie the Choo-Choo, a spooky fictional children’s book about a talking train that foreshadows Blaine the Mono.

I was excited to learn it’s been turned into a real book, illustrations and all, and I want to give you a hardcover copy.

Here’s the deal.

I want to write full time, but I need help building a self-sustaining platform for my books. You guys have given me so much support and encouragement already, and I don’t want to ask you for money without also offering you something fun in return. I tried this back in February with Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology and got a fantastic response from you guys, so I’m doing it again 🙂

If you pledge to my Patreon at the $2 level or above, I’ll send you a free hardcover copy of Charlie the Choo-Choo. If you change your mind after I’ve sent the book, you’re free to cancel your pledge, no questions asked. I believe most people are honest and won’t take advantage.
